Keep reading to discover how you can ensure you get the best punching bag that will take your training to new heights.
Benefits of practicing boxing, muay thai or other martial arts with a punching bag:
- better physical condition
Punching bag exercises are a great general development exercise.
They improve speed, efficiency, endurance and motor coordination. Due to the involvement of many muscle groups during training, training on the bag is also a great way to burn unnecessary calories. In the opinion of many trainers, the effort that comes with training on a punching bag is comparable to fatigue during an intense sprint - that is why training with a bag is increasingly used not only among martial arts enthusiasts, but also by people who want to develop a good physical condition.
- psychological aspects
Training on a punching bag improves our sense of self-confidence by improving our physical condition and strengthening the strength of our punches. Training on a sack is also a great way to get rid of negative emotions and a way to distract yourself from everyday problems.
- improvement of martial arts techniques
Without a doubt, a punching bag is one of the basic training devices in any martial art.
Training on the bag allows us not only to improve the strength and technique of strikes, but also to work on coordination when performing a combination of techniques. One of the most important elements in bag training is the ability to learn to feel distance when delivering strokes.
Regular training on the bag also strengthens the muscles that determine the strength and dynamics of strokes.
Which punching bag should you choose?
Material
This is definitely one of the most important things when choosing the right punching bag. Of course, the best solution is to choose natural leather, but you have to take into account the high cost of such a bag and not everyone wants or can spend too much of their hard-earned money for this purpose. So what is the alternative? Definitely PVC.
PVC is a very durable material that is mainly used for the production of tarpaulins, covers and military tents. Recently, mainly due to its low cost (compared to natural leather), it is one of the most popular materials used in the production of punching bags.
However, remember that pvc is not equal to pvc - the right weight and its strength are important. It is recommended that the basic weight of the pvc is 650 g / m2 - it will provide sufficient strength while maintaining sufficient flexibility.
Filling
You can read about the type of filling of punching bags in the article - How to fill a punching bag ? - But when you decide to buy a filled bag, the best solution is to buy a bag filled with material scraps. It is also worth paying attention to the strong compression of the filler, which will affect both the weight of the bag and the comfort of exercising on it.
Fastening strap
Tape should be at least 10 cm long, but the longer the better. It is best if the bands are additionally trimmed with a surrounding strip - this will significantly increase the strength and resistance to damage.
Surrounding stripe
Not all punching bag manufacturers use it, but it's worth investing in a bag that has it - it reinforces the strength of the bands and masks them at the same time, thanks to which the bag looks better and does not protrude the bands, which cause abrasions on the hands during impact.

Types of punching bags:
- Boxing/classic punching bag is the most popular type of punching bag. It can be successfully used by both beginners and advanced fighters in boxing or other martial arts. Depending on the dimensions, you can train both hand techniques and kicks on it.
The MMA training bag – MMA bags are specialized punching bags that, thanks to their shape, allow not only effective, specialized training in a standing collar, but also to perfect throwing and ground techniques.
Thanks to the appropriate profiling, MMA bags have strike plans arranged at different angles, thanks to which you can train specialized techniques such as elbow strikes or chin strikes on them.
The profiling is also aimed at facilitating the execution of throws and sitting while improving ground techniques.
We recommend bags of this type primarily to MMA trainers and advanced players who want to improve advanced techniques.
Punching bag hanging / uppercut a specialized type of bag for practicing hook and hook punches for example in boxing. It has a double diameter: larger at the top of the bag, smaller at the bottom. The length of the bag is usually between 80-150 cm, and the weight, depending on dimensions and filling, is 20-50 kg. This type of bag is mainly used by boxing adepts to train chin techniques.
Punching pear / uppercut punching bag - pear-shaped bags are intended for people who want to improve hook and chin punches. Bags of this type, thanks to their considerable weight (approx. 30 kg), are also a very good alternative to traditional bags for people who do not have a sufficiently tall room.
Which punching bag size should you choose? Not just for boxing
After deciding on the punching bag, you should choose the right size.
Among many beginners there is a belief that the bag should be as large and heavy as possible so that it does not sway as much as possible during training - is this correct? No that's not true.
Remember that it is advisable to swing the bag during training - in this way we develop not only the power of impact, but also coordination and a sense of distance, because the swaying of the bag forces us to constantly move.
The size of the bag and its weight should depend on the height of the room in which it will be hung and the type of training we intend to carry out
With a good punching bag height depending on the height of the room, remember to add the following:
- chain length: approx. 40 cm
- ceiling attachment length: approx. 15 cm
- distance from the ground (minimum 30 – 40 cm)

Punching bags of this type are mainly used for punch strength training. Due to the heavy weight and the large impact surface, both foot and hand techniques can be comfortably trained on them. Bags of this type are often chosen by Kickboxing and Muay Thai fighters.
Medium punching bags (weight approx. 30 – 50 kg) – size is usually 130 or 140 cm.

Unfilled punching bags for self-filling - shipping punching bags is expensive due to their volume and weight.
Therefore, there is an option for an empty punching bag with a chain for self-filling. See more >>
What should the diameter/circumference of the punching bag be?
The optimal recommended circumference of the punching bag used in boxing or martial arts is 125-126 cm, which is about 40 cm in diameter. It is the optimal circumference of the bag, which provides sufficient training space and weight on the bag, and at the same time allows the bag to be covered for specialized training in the clinch.
As for the bags intended for recreational and endurance training, you can use slightly narrower bags, recommended bags with a circumference of about 110 cm (about 35 in diameter).
In the case of punching bags which are mainly intended for punch training, bags with a circumference of approx. 159-160 cm (diameter approx. 45) are also used.
